Henrik Ibsen’s study
The idea that I can look around my favourite writers’ homes is fascinating to me and has always been. Sometimes, their surroundings reveal more about them than their books do. Architectural Digest has a feature on homes of writers like Truman Capote, Mark Twain, Edith Wharton, Gore Vidal, Henrik Ibsen, Dylan Thomas, Rudyard Kipling -a beautiful library there. There is only a photo for each writer but it is revelatory. For example, if you have read Ibsen, that’s what you expect his home to be like.
I found two more homes not included in the magazine, but equally haunting and beautiful.
This is one of the houses where Virginia Woolf lived, Monk’s House, in Sussex. The photo is from the Daily Telegraph.
Karen Blixen’s house -now a museum- in Denmark. The picture was found here.
This room is from Blixen’s house in Kenya. The photograph is from here.
A similar -very interesting- series of photos with writers’ rooms can be found in the Guardian, here.
