After I had gone to the beautiful complex of villages called Zagoria –hope you get an idea from the pictures- Dad went into hospital with high blood sugar. He stayed there for 4 days, some of the most difficult days of my life. Not because Dad’s situation was hopeless, far from it, but because the situation in Greek hospitals is hopeless. I saw things nobody should see, junkies with hepatitis peeing on the corridor floors, old people with strokes with no one to look after them who could barely call the nurse, and so much ugliness and neglect.
I persevered until Dad got out and then I collapsed. I don’t want to explain, I know you get the picture.

Things are quiet now, and Dad is much better and we are all better. I am looking forward to Christmas.
The other day, we went to a party my son was invited to. He is in sixth grade now, and I was watching the girls in his class. Little girls this age always move me. They had practised their dance routines and were trying to do their best. They were sitting on sofas, telling their little secrets. They had no idea how great their lives are going to be and sometimes, how difficult.  I was reminded of one of my favourite songs, the one I have uploaded for you,  which is for these little girls and for all my girlfriends online and offline, my mum and my sister.

What it feels like for a girl

I understand how you feel after your experience in a Greek hospital. I thought Canadian hospitals were horrible after what I went through with my mother over a seven week period. Compared to what my husband saw this past spring in an Athens hospital over a three week period while his mother lay dying of cancer made me realize that we still have it good. Not perfect mind you but certainly better. I love your photos, they cheered me up…ciao

    Beautiful villages!
Hospitals aren’t a good place no matter where in the world, but a big city and capital like Athens should have the best hospitals, equipment, doctors, nurses etc.. My parents live in a small village in northern Greece and the next hospital is 40 km away. I hope they will never need to go there.

Hope your dad is getting better. Indeed hospitals are an indication of what ails countries, no matter their economic progress. You do see some of the same neglect here in the states as well.

If our “wishes” do come true, Melissa and I may pay you and your country a visit by next year.

Thanks for the song, it always makes me want to scream feminist anthems ;)

I’m glad your Dad is doing better – hospitals are evil places and it’s best if we avoid them as much as we can. Sadly, it’s sometimes easier to get worse than better in hospitals, especially for people in frail conditions, with all the infections and neglect going on. :(

I’ll focus on those gorgeous reddish leaves up there instead :)

I am so very sorry to hear your father was ill. It is hard enough worrying about your loved one and then dealing with those disturbing things at the hospital. It is so sad that people are not taken better care of when they are sick. I know our nursing homes for the elderly can be awful…
Hope you get some rest and enjoy your Christmas.
    Sending you big hugs,

I hope both you and your Dad will feel much better now. Some years ago my parents had an accident and had to stay at a hospital at Kozani for a few days, so I know what a hard time you must have experienced. Hopefully our lives will bring us more red leaves and less such experiences.

My thoughts are with you and your family. That’s horrible about hospitals. That song is amazing though. It induces just the right techno euphoria for celebration. Maybe I’ll put it on tonight at the stroke of twelve. Happy 2010!
