Snow in Athens

Photos, Weekends

This is in my neighbourhood.

This is our street. It is unrecognizable.

This is the tree I see from my balcony

Anakin Skywalker looks a bit cross. I’d be too if I had to walk in the snow. The one left behind wasn’t as lucky though.

When it snows in Athens you have to read lots of comics to spend the weekend. And that’s what my son did.

This is the shopping bag we made for the magazine I work for.

I made some spanakorizo. That’s spinach rice. You eat it with feta cheese.

I bought these new plates for 1 Euro each.

The Snow

You have to forgive the millions of boring snow photos, but you must understand my excitement. We see snow every 3 to 4 years in Athens, at least in the southern suburbs where I live. I was watching the people walking in the street with a big smile on their faces. Even my grumpy neighbours went out to play with the snow.

The computer

Well, the computer died. It was a long awaited death. I am writing this on M’s laptop. I didn’t have an internet connection for a week because I couldn’t configure the router’s settings. Finally I called the help desk and they DIDN’T help at all. I did the opposite of what they had told me to do and it worked.

The translations

I have been working for a history project since September, essentially translating from Greek to English, hundreds of interviews from people who experienced certain events that are important in modern greek history. And it ends in late February, so I have neglected everything else. Most days, all I do is translate. Sometimes it is boring, but other times, what I have to translate is moving and well written and it brings tears to my eyes.

The house

We have been looking for a house. This brings tears to my eyes too. Tears of laughter. Why do people who sell their houses believe they are selling you the key to heaven? Along with St. Peter, 2 in one?

Wow, snow! We haven’t had any this year in Denmark, and your post makes me realize that I kinda miss it.

And that’s a lot of translations! It sounds like hard work…but wonderful that some of it is so moving.

I’ve seen enough of the stuff, but Happy Snow-dump Aftermath to you! :-D Mostly I’m stuck in one position regarding the translations. Only my fingers can move to form the wondering how you do all the stuff you do. You’ve got a husband, a son, you work for a magazine, you make things, you blog, you take pictures and do translations like crazy. When do you sleep??? Or do you? Put me out of my misery and tell me your secret. Name your price.

hehee, there is no secret except that i don’t do all of this on the same day. For example sometimes i look after my husband and other times i neglect him and play on the computer all day. And if i was so wonderful i wouldn’t have left the translations till the last minute. I don’t sleep much though, that’s true. xx

We’ll be house hunting this coming May, and I wouldn’t take a key to heaven or have St. Peter come with the house even if he was paying the closing costs. :-D

It’s definitely going crazy because over here we’ve had 21 ºC and people going to the beach while it’s snowing in Athens!

    What fluffy wonderful snow :)
I feel terrible but I’m so envious that you’re translating that. I wish someone gave me something to translate, anything. Not in Greek obviously ;)

I’m so glad you’re back and never say Astrology doesn’t work because Mercury is direct today and you reappeared. hehe
The bag looks great and so does the food - please come and cook for me!

Your boots look nice and new still, you should see ours… we have had 70 cm just in FEBRUARY, and the winter’s not over yet. I do understand your excitement though, I just can’t share it right now. I do love your food photos and the 1 euro plate looks gorgeous…ciao and happy playing.

  9. JackPT Says:

Wow. Sometimes good things do come out of the blue :).

    Your project sounds cool also.

  10. Crag Says:

Funny, I posted winter pictures tonight as well. But I’m not nearly as cheerful as you about the snow. I especially like your road in the snow. I like pictures of (nearly) empty streets. People just get in the way, eh?

  11. Gina Says:

Gorgeous snow!!!! wish you would send a little this way!

Looking for a house? well, that interests me ( i’m a realtor-rofl) . I would love to see some pics of the possibilities- I love different countries and their housing market. is the market good there? it is a disaster here, but somehow i am doing very well… yeah yeah enough about me. just email me :) LOL

glad you are almost done with your big job translating and cute purse and lovely dishes! One euro each? such a steal.

  12. Gina Says:

forgot to say, look how happy your son looks! that pic is frame-worthy! so cute

  13. missalister Says:

You’re normal then? I guess I’m somewhat relieved, although I think you would have made a good super-hero. Maybe even have retroactively averted the Clone Wars! ;-)

  14. Meow Says:

Wow, Chloe, what wonderful photos. It all looks so beautiful, hope you enjoy it all. We don’t get snow, ever, where I live, and have to drive about 3 hours to get to the mountains in Winter to ski, if we want to.
HOpe you have been keeping well. Sorry I haven’t been by for absolutely ages. I really miss reading your blog.
    Have a wonderful week.
    Take care, Meow xx

  15. Cathy Says:

Your snow photos are lovely (even coming from a jaded Canadian!).
We have ahd torrential rain here: the world is turned upside down.

I hope your son is feeling better and you are momentarily enjoying a good section of translation.

And the house hunting: so exciting when you are the buyer and so not fun to be the seller: they have to tell you theirs is the most wonderful place on Earth (but why are they selling it then?…) So you’ll have to send me photos of the potential houses: this is very exciting, Chloe!

(oh, and the bag is really lovely: I am inspired to go out and buy some fabric!).
    xoxo
    Cathy

Nothing can beat a fresh white snow. It looked lovely. Did your son make a snowman?
So sorry about your computer. Do you have plans to purchase a new
one? Please don’t stay away too long.
    Love your posts.

    Hugs,

Lovely pix. We have snow on the summits of our mountains in Hawaii, while it’s tropical at the beaches.
Do you have real estate agents in Greece, or do owners personally handle the sale of their houses? Most houses here are sold by agents.

  18. Cisco Says:

It’s great to see snow in areas where normally you get one inch or two every 6 to 10 years…. It is the same thing here in Las Vegas. NV

  19. Agadir Says:

Where did you get thrse marvellous plates! I want them too! The spanakoryzo seems delicious and i’starving to death right now. I have no time do nothing else but reading for my examinations and your posts!
    Be well!

  20. m Says:

Your neighborhood looks great! I had this vision of you living at the foot of the Acropolis or something. Enjoy the snow!

  21. scholiast Says:

That’s where it is, then - we haven’t got any snow here… But staying in to read the whole weekend when for once there is snow? I mean, we do that here, when there’s snow for months and months… But for just one weekend I think I could handle snowmen and snowball fights :)

You probably already know that translators (us, that is..) have their own saint, St Jerome? And our very own day — erh, I think it’s September some time, so perhaps not too great a cause for celebration just yet… At least it’s never too late to translate ;)

Do tell us about the house - when there is one!

  22. teemu Says:

It was amazing indeed. It got to this point in Nea Penteli:

I really feel for you about the translation project. I ‘m having an exhausting experience of translating some articles about archaeology. At least you enjoyed the snow! Your pictures are great!
