Insomnia

I don’t know any other person apart from newborn babies and jet-lagged people who have so outrageous sleeping patterns (they are so chaotic they are not even patterns; there must be some method in their madness but I cannot fathom it). It sounds ironic, but should I try hypnosis? Or something stronger? Like magic?

Tomorrow there are more tests for my hand as well as a check-up to establish that the damage is purely mechanical, not pathological. And then a business meeting. Thank God, I do business with my friend. I think what I need is an enduring lullaby.

You should meet my lady. She gets up early and goes to bed late. I suspect she reads when she goes to bed and actually sleeps for a couple of minutes a night.

    Insanity.

  2. Heidi Says:

I don’t have a problem falling asleep..5 mins and I’m gone…But I wake up about 5 times a night..Last night was bad. Too much on my mind etc.. Hope you get many hours of sleep tonight…If the lullaby works let me know which one. ;)

  3. wcdixon Says:

Know this would be difficult but suggest lying down around 10pm say…no computer, no tv, and no books…and see what happens. I find when I turn everything off usually sleep comes quickly.

Oh yeah…a energetic session of lovemaking to preceed that 10pm target doesn’t hurt.

  4. DayByDay4-2Day Says:

Taking a nap for more then 20 minutes during the day will cause a grompy feeling, plus it will inhibit one nights sleep.

I wish I had an answer; some magical cure. But alas, I am no magician.

I have just an awful time sleeping. Mine started when my mother became ill. I am up at all hours. I just take naps during the night. Too bad we don’t live closer…we could meet for warm milk or some wine.lol

    Hugs,
    Connie

I think meditation can really help, but if you’re just starting out it’s a good idea to try and find a teacher. CDs etc can vary a lot in their effectiveness (and a LOT of them have this really annoying new-agey music!). A v. quick search for teachers yielded this, you might want to take a look

One amazing technique to fall asleep is to hold your breath til you pass out. The beauty of it is the built in safety feature where once you pass out you go back to breathing.

Ah, that song, haven’t listened to it for so long, I can’t remember how it starts…
Isn’t it true that the most chaotic bits of nature obbey very complicated patterns, even when they seem to be completely random? I think your lack of pattern is a pattern, written by mother nature, and it allows you to have great ideas while you’re awake. At least, that’s what I hope (but deep down, when I’m insomniac I feel like I’m losing precious sleeping time).
I’m still laughing at your ‘cartoon’ - I love your slippers :)
Oh and those greek characters in plastic are so funny, it’s such a stylish alphabet ;)

  14. Hattie Says:

The things that keep me awake are sleeping with someone who snores and/or drinking more than one glass of wine in the evening.

I hope your meeting goes well–it should right? I mean you did say it was with a friend.

After much struggling and trying 3 medications that didn’t work, I finally found one that DOES work, is non-addictive and doesn’t have icky side effects. If you’re open to it, I’d discuss it w/ a Dr. I’m a much happier soul.

difficult… difficult… maybe you have to get reaaaaaally tired before things can return back to normality.
What about sports, sex or jogga :-)

  18. gina Says:

do you take ambien, lunesta or even tylenol nighttime? what about a shot of whiskey before bed? LOL> i had insomnia for a spell, and there is not much else worse than that feeling- it makes you want to cry in the middle of the LONGGGG night. poor baby :( i hope you sleep tonight- smashing pumpkins can be lullaby-like…? yes?

  19. Anonymous Says:

Chloe, I introduce you to my mom, who sleeps at varying times through the day, for varying lengths of time, rarely at a nice, 12 to 8 AM schedule. On many occasions, she goes for days without any sleep.

And, um, they kind of do make sleep in a pill.

  23. Anonymous Says:

Have you tried melatonin? It helped when I couldn’t sleep.
Although, I am still sleeping erratically… but at least there is more sleep than not these days.

    Sending you warm fuzzy thoughts

  24. Anonymous Says:

Hope you sort out your sleep problems, Chloe … there’s nothing worse than insomnia. Fortunately, it doesn’t happen to me too often … I usually cure it by having a few really, really late nights in a row, where I have to wake up early … this is enough to make me really sleepy by about the 4th night, so I just fall asleep for about 12 hours straight !!
    Good luck !!
Take care, dear Chloe … hugs, Meow

  25. mindy Says:

chloe: i totally sympathize with you! i have been having hand/joint problems and the dr. prescribed tons of steroids. now, i eat all day and all night. no sleep for me. if only…

  26. sirbarrett Says:

I’m sorry I haven’t sang you any sleeptime songs lately.

Maybe you should eat some turkey. The tryptophan knocks you out. Oh, yeah. Sorry. I forgot your were a ve-

    Nevermind.

Now that I’m looking this up I see that used to make dietary supplements of L-tryptophan in the US for insomnia depression and premenstral syndrome but then when the manufacturer changed it’s fermentation process a batch was tainted, 5,000 people got sick and 27 died from eosinophilic-myalgia syndrome. But it’s still legal in Canada!

Maybe we’re just making it too complicated. Just be happy and don’t think to much! GO TO SLEEP!!
