Tomorrow I am going to meet a friend I made on Blogger. She is coming for dinner. I am very happy. I can’t tell you how happy. Also, I am so tired today. I was carrying a table back and forth, all day because the people at the store couldn’t find its code number. So, not a coherent post, just things that are flooding my mind. I only wanted to say “hi” really, so the post is my cheap excuse for logging in.Oh, and also to tell you I just watched The Constant Gardener which left me speechless. Find it and see it if you haven’t.
I found these letters from kids to god here. I don’t know if they are genuine, but I liked them so much.
Finally, these are two conversations I had with my son on the phone yesterday:
-Is third grade easier than second grade?
-It is more interesting and it is easier too.
-So, school is the opposite of computer games. The next level is easier.
(My son went to see a magician perform his tricks along with other children.)
-Was the magician fun?
-Yes, lots of fun. But he told me to shut up.
-Oh, why?
-Because I kept shouting at him “I see you! You are holding it with your other hand.”

I absolutely LOVED the Constant Gardener.
Your son; TOO cute
And now, I am jealous because another blogger is coming to your house for food porn.
July 28th, 2006 at 8:30 pm
what a KID!! LOL
What should really leave you speechless about Constant Gardner is that in the credits of the movie Le Carre mentions that when he was researching for the book in Africa what he ACTUALLY saw makes his book seem like a holiday post card.
LOVED the movie. Munich was very good too. Very violent but very well made.
July 28th, 2006 at 8:31 pm
oh, did you find my night stand?
July 28th, 2006 at 9:50 pm
Kids are just too honest for magic aren’t they?
July 28th, 2006 at 10:44 pm
rofl!!! shut up.
i hope you have fun with your friend. what kind of table did you find? and better yet, what are you making for dinner? inquiring vegetarian wants to know
July 29th, 2006 at 12:03 am
Shouldn’t the people at the store be carrying the table?
Like Cathy, I’m jealous of all you blogfriends visiting each other. I feel so far away from everyone.
Raise a glass for all of us who cannot be there, then tell us all about it in your blog

Funny stuff and a great movie…I’m always amazed how people can sell their soul for money…
July 29th, 2006 at 1:33 am
the constant gardener made me cry. i’m not ashamed to admit that it did. it just did.
it makes you so angry at people for their greed. i agree with sumo, greed is a four letter word right up there with fuck.
July 29th, 2006 at 3:02 am
I loved the Constant Gardener too, had me completly mesmerised. You’re so lucky to be able to have lunch with another Blogger, how fun!
July 29th, 2006 at 3:41 am
Your son is good!!! But then, almost as good as mine…

I hope you ll have a nice time with your friend
July 29th, 2006 at 8:16 am
Your son is the coolest!
July 29th, 2006 at 9:39 am
Cathy
don’t be jealous. M is going to join us for dinner and probably take the poor woman through 2 World Wars.
Zona
yes Zona, you have to tidy up. How do you sleep with bills next to you!I would have nightmares.
erikku
yes and he mustn’t have been David Copperfield either.
Gina
oh nothing much, just a standard veranda table for us to eat outside.
This is what i am making, and i hope Joanna is not reading:
-potato salad with mushrooms
-green salad with grilled figs and cream cheese
-red pepper and olive tart
-maybe an aubergine appetizer
-vanilla ice cream with morello sauce (i am not making this, i bought the ice cream and my sister has made morello marmalade with whole morellos, yum yum)
Stephanie
they should but it is one of those huge ikea type stores where you do everything yourself.
You are not far away from everyone. Most of our blog friends are in the States and Canada.
I am going to raise many glasses to you and will no doubt end up drunk.
kuan gung
and then, they don’t have a soul anymore. And they have to fill the hole it leaves as it goes away, with material things and it is a vicious circle.
Welcome!
Great white hype
it made me cry too. the idea that there are millions of people on the planet whose life isn’t worth a penny to the world.
Michelle
Ralph Fiennes has that mesmerizing effect on people. I had forgotten how good an actor he is. He is amazing.
Vista
we are going to meet too!
Stephanie
a reasonable kid who wanted his money’s worth!

I think that God’s got a sick sense of humour, and when I die, I expect to find him laughing…

The Constant Gardener was a good film and book. Le Carre is a good writer, some of his post Smiley’s People is a bit stuck in the past, in a way that a lot of Graham Greene stories aren’t (focusing less on trade craft and more on human interaction). A lot of Le Carre’s work represents the extreme grubbiness of a particular cold war period. The Constant Gardener was good though (as are the Smiley’s People books, but with the above caveat). Ralph Fiennes was excellent in the role of a straight-laced diplomat. I’d very much recommend another film featuring Ralph Fiennes, which is probably very difficult to obtain, called “A Dangerous Man: Lawrence After Arabia”.
There’s being quite a few films focusing on the plight of Africa in the last few years. I recently saw “Lord of War”, which was a caricature of the arms industry through the eyes of a ’super’ arms dealer. So nowhere near the realism of the Constant Gardener. It’s still a film I’d recommend on the basis of Eamonn Walker’s acting performance, which was superb. He played Andre Baptiste Senior, a west African dictator with a sadistic streak on-par with Stalin’s.

What a great collection of elements in this post! I’m especially entranced with the letters.

Your lucky, lucky guest!! Wish it was me! Hope you have a wonderful lunch.
Magician needs to learn to use his good words. “Shut Up” was a little harsh…too funny about your son!!
Take care,
Connie

Sometimes I’m not so sure about the dinosaur one - I can think of times when a dinosaur could come in very handy.
Neat kid.

I have a lovely poem written by a child but it’s a huge file as I scanned it at the wrong setting and I haven’t reduced it… shall I send it?
August 2nd, 2006 at 7:07 am
Where does your son get his adeptness from? I have a guess.
Those are the cutest/funniest letters to God.
I love how children still have the ability to ask questions that don’t have answers yet adults seem to forget to ask after awhile.

the conversation with your son is so sweet:)
