The swallow of summer, the seamstress of summer, She scissors the blue into shapes and she sews it, She draws a long thread and she knots it at the corners. Ted Hughes- Work and Play
My friend Pille visited me on Sunday. I know her from my other blog neighbourhood, and I mean my recipes blog. I have to tell you, it didn’t feel like I only knew her from the blog. She was pleasant, kind, funny, interesting. I only wish we had a bit more time together, to show her around. If we had more time, I’d take her to my favourite restaurant and to a nice little lake, well, lagoon really, half an hour away from here. So, I was thinking, where would you take me, if I rang your bell and it was summer? And the sun shone? And we had the day to ourselves?

Chloe- You always choose brilliant, expressive photos for you posts. I wish I had such a gift. Today I have a cartoon squirrel.
June 28th, 2006 at 7:17 am
Oh, your lucky friend, Pille!
And oh, the places we would go…
we would visit downtown Halifax (it never gets too hot here) and look in the shops; pick out fun little things for one another. I’d show you my favourite magazine shop and we’d go to the waterfront and see the Historic Properties, and then Pier 21 (a historic Canadian site, where thousands of immigrants from many many countries, including Greece, entered Canada). Then we would have lunch at a cozy cafe and talk and drink nice coffees and have sweets. We would continue to roam around; visit the oldest BookStore in Canada (The Book Room), go to Loomis & Tooles (my favourite art store) and the go to some clothing shops until dinner time and then go to a nice restaurant; perhaps “Chives”; my friend is a chef there and he would serve us great food.
So, would you like to hear about day 2 on the itinerary?…
I am working from home today and although it is foggy, I am thrilled to have the place to myself
June 28th, 2006 at 7:29 am
Oh that’s so nice

I’m glad you had a good time with Pille!
Let’s see, I’d probably take you to the river side, to sit on one of the bars in the margin and enjoy the view. It’s a bit breathtaking…Or we could go to the city park that stretches itself into the beach. It’s quite something
June 28th, 2006 at 8:20 am
Seattle. 2+ hour drive thru the hills and forest and the Skagit valley to one of my all time fave downtowns.
June 28th, 2006 at 8:39 am
I’d take you to Greenwich park, and then the North Pole piano bar, and then I’d take you to the corner of the road near my house so that you could be a witness to the green parrots inexplicably living in a tree there.
June 28th, 2006 at 8:53 am
We have an underground city here of shopping but on a sunny day outdoor shops will be the first. Historic sites, hoarse calache ride, cafes, omg so much to do 1 day is not enough.
June 28th, 2006 at 9:36 am
phil
squirrels are a gift Phil.
plus, you tell great stories, even today that you said you had nothing to write.
Cathy

June 28th, 2006 at 9:43 am
Chloe;
I hope you found it without too much trouble; it should be spelled tooles; http://www.toolesartstore.com I think…
June 28th, 2006 at 9:45 am
nope; http://www.loomisartstore.com
June 28th, 2006 at 10:12 am
There are lots of places we could go and things we could do, but I’d start with a walk around to see all the beautiful green copper towers. Then we’d have cake and chocolate at an amazing place called La Glace. The rest of the time would depend on what we felt like doing…shopping, museums, or just sitting in a bar along Strøget or Nyhavn and watching the world go by.
June 28th, 2006 at 10:16 am
I will take you tored Rock
Then lunch to one of my favourite Mexican Restaurants and in the afternoon, we’d have to “cruise the strip”
June 28th, 2006 at 11:22 am
Chloe:) It was my pleasure to meet you - and I am truly sad that the visit was so brief (if only the ferry hadn’t been 2 hours late, and if we only hadn’t slept in in the morning:) Thank you for the great late night meal, the wonderful breakfast frappe and the way too kind words about me!
June 28th, 2006 at 11:37 am
I’m with Cathy and Heidi… one day is not enough. I am torn between two plans:
Right now we are gearing up for Canada Day, and more importantly (in Calgary at least) Stampede! … So we would find a free breakfast somewhere downtown at one of the free Stampede Breakfasts. We would wander along Stephen’s Avenue, browsing through some shops, and passing some interesting little restaurants, though we wouldn’t stop because we would have lunch up the Calgary Tower. Then we could go to Prince’s Island Park, spend the afternoon walking along the Bow River, mong through the shops in the Eau Claire Market, and have dinner at the River Café, an organic food restaurant. After another walk along the river and downtown, we could stop for drinks at any one of several bars I know.
However, you’d miss the real Canada if we stayed in the urban areas. About a half hour outside Calgary is Banff National Park. From Canmore north, the whole left side of the province is parkland. Where Banff leaves off, Jasper National Park begins. We would take a long a picnic, and have a steady drive through both parks, visiting Lake Louise, the Columbia Ice Fields, Athabasca Falls, and whatever else catches our eye along the way… taking many many many pictures of course. Anything we didn’t see on the way up (we’d overnight in Jasper) we could see on the way back down to Calgary… or we could leave the parks, and head over to the West Edmonton Mall… no, actually, I don’t think we should go there. You’ll never leave. Immigration would eventually find you (after a year or two) and deport you back to Greece.
So you tell me… which would you prefer?
June 28th, 2006 at 12:08 pm
If you brought your son we might go to Disneyworld of course! Otherwise our drive would be a little bit longer and we would go to the west coast of Florida. Anyone of the beautiful beaches, have lunch in a seafood restaurant overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. When can you be here?
June 28th, 2006 at 12:49 pm
Cathy
google corrected it for me. patronising google.
Kimananda
i love those places! especially Nyhavn. It’s so picturesque. And wikipedia says Hans Christian Andersen used to live there. And i have to try the cake of the year at La Glace. xxx
cisco
Red Rock looks so imposing in your photos. Like it is being born from the guts of the earth right this minute.
Pille
i make horrid frappe Pille. you are too kind. especially for a gourmet.
next time we’ll go to Nafplio too. It’s a lovely, historic seaside town in the Peloponese, 2 hours from Athens.
Crag
Calgary Tower looks perfect and very cosmopolitan. we could have martinis there and enjoy the view.
And that River Cafe is amazing. I went to their site, their site is beautiful too. And i read that in Banff National Park there are Harlequin ducks, i adore them!
xxxxx
Sara
i’d go to Disneyworld with or without my son!
i am coming asap. xxx
June 28th, 2006 at 12:53 pm
Why go anywhere when there’d be so much to talk about?
Then again, Mn is known for it lakes and I live near two.
June 28th, 2006 at 12:54 pm
CoolCat

days…or more…
June 28th, 2006 at 1:27 pm
I’d hafta let the CoolCat show you the Twin Cities. I’d just show you things which have been keeping me from blogging properly, i.e., woodworking projects in my garage and the CAD drawings on my computer.
June 28th, 2006 at 1:59 pm
We could get blind drunk on summer cocktails and try to invade the neighbouring county ;-).
June 28th, 2006 at 2:03 pm
we would take a convertible and drive along the rhine… beautiful i promise!
June 28th, 2006 at 2:07 pm
maddy

June 28th, 2006 at 3:52 pm
I could take you to some historical monuments, incredible palaces, and ancient temples (a few hours drive from the city) that you will be truly amazed at Indian Art and Architecture

I am myself amazed at them each time I see them.
You will also get great Indian food (I know you are veg), coffee, and the wonderful company of yours truly
June 28th, 2006 at 4:05 pm
How ’bout the country? I know roads that take you into the middle of a green woodsy nowhere.
That is not a bad thing, but it’d be better in autumn.
Of course I’d take you into the city if you want, even though I know nothing about it. ^_^
June 28th, 2006 at 5:35 pm
Etchen
I am a park gal.
i saw it in Wikipedia. It’s lovely (i saw it frozen too).
Wriju
“yours truly” would be enough but i’m going to have to see the mythical palaces i read in novels about. xxx
Erikku
and we’d have a picnic in the woods. and listen to Muse. yes!
June 28th, 2006 at 6:02 pm
Of course you could meet my Grandpa! I’m sure he’d be really pleased too. My GrandMa is more of a talker though…and despite not knowing greek or english I’m sure she’d find a way to communicate with you.
June 28th, 2006 at 6:25 pm
Cute purse! ~ jb///
June 28th, 2006 at 6:27 pm
I’d take you out on a walk along the old city wall… which goes halfway around the downtown area. between the old wall and the main roads, there’s a bunch of little parks you can walk through, with birds chirpin’, the leaves of the trees whispering, a little river floating by lazily… and I’d show you the waterlilies and in the end (after about half an hour), we’d climb the hill and then we’d go to this piazza, sit down in front of this bar/café and have caffeinated beverages, sit in the shades, just watch the world pass by and giggle ‘coz we can sit right here and enjoy the good life while they have to run by like fools
xxx
June 28th, 2006 at 6:40 pm

June 28th, 2006 at 10:18 pm
i think i would take you to the Shannandoah (sp)mountains..and the Luray Caverns here in VA..about an hour away. very beautiful, specially in the fall when all the decorative trees cover the land. the air is crisp and clean, very nice peaceful place to have a picnic!
June 28th, 2006 at 11:43 pm
well, if you showed up in the next week or so we would go for a motorcycle ride around the hill country and spend the day at the lake
but since you’d probably be visiting me *after* the bike is sold, we’d probably still go to the lake, or go for a hike and/or swim outing and then check out some good music at night…
June 29th, 2006 at 12:07 am
Well, I’d take you where YOU want to go - If you visit the bay area then I think I think You’d enjoy Santa Cruz (beaches) and shopping

June 29th, 2006 at 2:54 am
Because I really have no idea where to take you in Athens, other than the vegetarian restaurant Eden (which i like, though I think it is overpriced), I would make you a Southern-US-style vegetarian brunch of pimiento cheese and buttermilk biscuits, tomato pie, grilled asparagus with roasted shallots and cranberry vinaigrette, and, for dessert, carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. Oh, and lots of coffee and fresh-squeezed orange juice, too!
And then we could talk and talk and then take a walk to Veikou Park, where I like to go to pretend that I don’t live in Athens.
But for more ideas in Athens, I will have to ask you, since I am the newbie here…
June 29th, 2006 at 3:23 am
Hmmmm, now where would I take you ?? Well, I think I would take you anywhere you wanted to go. I know I would like to show you our wonderful city. Mostly, though, I would just love to chat, to get to know you better … that would be nice.
Have a great day.
Take care, Meow

hey, have you noticed that when you don’t speak the other person’s language, if you speak really really loudly, and stress EVERY word, they nod, which means they understand?
hehe.
lz blogger
thank you lazy blogger. i never get to carry it around because it is so loud, but it is good for decoration.
daria
oh yes!
and when the others have to run like fools, somehow slacking and enjoying the good life seems even more fun.
stephanie
what about craft shops? and the Quincy Market? (i did some research)
nabeel
it usually is everywhere (all over the house), anywhere (where the hell di my bag go?) and nowhere to be found.
Vani
i love picnics! and stalactite and stalagmite formations too. caverns are exciting places.
moondog

true blue

now you can make the itinerary
deepa
you are back!

joanna

Can you make all these things? Why don’t you start a recipe site? Or you can guest post at mine.
I should show you around Athens.
Meow
you are so far away, i think everything is going to look exotic to me there. Even parking lots. Everything is going to be something worth seeing.
June 29th, 2006 at 6:21 am
everything sounds so nice
wanderlust kicking in…
well, you probably know all the nice places from when you used to live here, but id take you out sailing in the firth of forth and then we’d go for tea and fruit scones at the little cafe at cramond. they put tables out in the sun.

June 29th, 2006 at 7:38 am
Hmmm - lets see. We have everything from downtown Denver, especially the Lo-Do area (very fun and exciting night life), to Garden of the Gods! So yes, we’d definitely hit those, plus the Tattered Cover Bookstore (at its brand new location, after 20 years!), and the Royal Gorge Park and Bridge. And if I could arrange it, a great concert at Red Rocks Outdoor Theatre. Then up to the mountains, maybe visiting one or two casinos along the way (just for the fun of it!), enjoying the beautiful mountain scenery. Yep - I definitely think we’d need more than a couple of days!
June 29th, 2006 at 2:43 pm
can we flip flop the days please? i want to go to pireaus first
lol
cant wait!!!!!!!
June 29th, 2006 at 3:33 pm
