This is the Nao Victoria. A replica of the first ship ever to circumnavigate the world in 1519. It also commemorates the voyage of that first ship (one of five ships commanded by Fernando Magellan) by making the same journey. It is in Pireaus now and heading to Seville tomorrow thus ending the journey. We went to see it along with hundreds of other people. Greeks are fascinated by ships. In fact, shipping, is one of the things we are good at. I don’t think the crew of the ship expected so many visitors.
Then we went to this place "Kollias" (the owner’s name) that specializes in seafood. I don’t eat seafood but my son does and he said it was delicious. It looked fresh and well cooked. Here’s the owner of the tavern. There are other things to eat too, so if you are vegetarians and go there, you won’t starve. It’s got some of the best food I’ve ever had.
This was my dessert. It’s called Kazan Dipi, made with buffalo’s milk. It is a speciality of the Turkish cuisine, but has passed to the Greek cuisine, especially in Northern Greece. It is very creamy and has flower water. So it smells wonderfully too.

Food….
The dessert looks like Mexica “flan” a gelatin type of dessert made with condensed milk and egg yolks-lots of them, but very good. The sauce is amde with caramelized sugar.
Hello there, ho pe you are feeling better. We all get those days when nothing feels right and you just want to throw your arms up in the air and say “f*** it”

March 25th, 2006 at 4:03 pm
Great photos, especially that pudding. It looks a little like something we have over here called milk pudding. Nice.
March 25th, 2006 at 4:26 pm
spooky…that’s us both posting boats today! sadly the only pudding i had today was a hot cross bun which wasn’t worthy of a photo itself!
March 25th, 2006 at 4:51 pm
i was thinking “flan” too…looks good!
March 25th, 2006 at 4:54 pm
Up north from me here in Michigan they eat Buffalo burgers. They say its much better then beef. I haven’t tried it myself though.

I’m glad there was a bit of Portugal over there (the Nau from Fernando Magalhães - I don’t know how the hell he became Magellan, but I guess it’s easier to pronounce
- Sorry about this, it’s just a bit of national pride.
The restaurant looks perfect - I really wish I was there. I’m bored to death. I’m glad you got away from the military parade

People here are fascinated with ships as well; Halifax has a typical stopping point for many so-called “Tall Ships”. This one I would have loved to have seen.
March 25th, 2006 at 7:41 pm
The dessert looks like my most
favorite dessert of all time
-creme caramel…
yummy!
the owners of the restaurant
are adorable - they must have
been thrilled to have the
culinary princess come by!

Yummy!
Looks like you had a nice day
I like ships.
March 26th, 2006 at 2:10 am
Woooow! just love greek food, even cypriot greek is good, you just do know how to cook and prepare food, no wonder the Greeks do so well in the shipping (cruise) industry what with at least half decent ships and great food, it must equal success, Great blog!

Vancouver is trying to start a Tall Ships fetival. Two years ago, it didn’t go well. I don’t know if thaey had it last year but I hope so. I love those old ships.
I always think of Treasure Island, or the Coral Island, or a dozen other naval-based stories with tall ships in them. I’d love to sail one, not just for a day, but a minimum of a week. Longer if possible.

cisco
thanks, i actually did say Fuck it!
This dessert doesn’t have gelatin (i’m vegetarian) but the sugar on top does caramelize much like creme brulee.
gurgo
we’ll go to Kollias when you are here dear.
gina
i made a mental note of the place for when you come!
zona

ruben

fly

vani

Devil
this happens to greek names too. I don’t really mind. Although i love the Portuguese language. I wanted to learn about 5 years ago and tried to find a school but there was none in greece. Then i called the portuguese embassy and they said they would get someone to call me and talk to me about private lessons but i didn’t want private, so that was it.
Cathy
my only regret was that the crew wasn’t dressed in clothes of the era, but as M remarked “these people are scientists, not clowns”, so…:)
maddy
it looks like creme caramel and there is some of that taste, but it is a bit lighter, and tastes like rose petals (because of the rose water in it)
pirate
i thought of you when i saw that ship!
i thought Frank would have loved it!
there was a mum with a toddler dressed as a pirate too.
maja
it was a day devoted to the beauties of the sea.
rob
welcome.
cypriot food is delicious, especially those potatoes they cook in wine!
i went to your blog and saw your boat, it’s great!!
blackcrag
i wish you fulfill your wish one day. when i saw the ship i thought i’d love to have a gourmet cafe in such a ship and maybe sail for a couple of hours each day. people would love to eat and drink in such a place, non?
(and no, i wouldn’t make you serve! we’d be partners in crime and you’d cook as well :))
March 26th, 2006 at 8:35 am
My food knowledge doesn’t go far beyond brussels sprouts and instant macaroni and cheese, but I like tall ships! We saw an exhibition of them in Maine once. Maybe I’ll post some pics…
March 26th, 2006 at 12:46 pm
OOOOO, I ‘m sooo hungry now!
March 26th, 2006 at 3:55 pm
Chloe: I’ll teach you portuguese, if you want. Since this is a public blog, they won’t be private lessons
March 26th, 2006 at 4:22 pm
Well I bet that was really fun for your son to see. Always nice to learn a little history while you are having fun.
Oh my I thought I was the only one in the world that didn’t like fish. Thanks for making me feel better.
Take good care and hang in there.
Hugs, Connie

March 26th, 2006 at 6:01 pm
The dessert looks like a creamier tiramisu.
I like seafood, just not fish. I’m more of a shellfish person.
March 26th, 2006 at 6:05 pm
dictionary says of ‘yar’ - characterized by speed and agility
March 26th, 2006 at 10:39 pm
