Isn’t breakfast the best meal of the day? Because you can eat all you want without remorse. And it’s not fussy and you can gulp it down while reading the papers or your friends’ blogs, or Real Simple (this magazine is one of my latest obsessions. I went out last night during a blizzard in order to buy it).
My favourite breakfast is the one a good lady used to make for me while I was staying in a bed and breakfast in Edinburgh and was flat hunting. Because I was outside all day, going from door to door and begging for a flat, that was my only proper meal. This good lady would also look in the ads section for me (I stayed in that B&B for a month) and she would always make a double portion of scrambled eggs for me. And the TV was on and I loved watching the morning news there. Because it was all about the weather. I think weather discussions make for good breakfast material. Somehow it is very comforting to me to think “oh that’s what’s important today, the weather, nothing bad has happened yet”.
I have been searching for breakfast recipes online and found lots and lots and it seems that people all over the world like eggs for breakfast, or pancakes, although pancakes go by a hundred different names.
So here’s my recipe for a good breakfast:
-Bach for breakfast, especially the violin concertos. Louis Armstrong is great too.
-Extensive weather reports but the calm reports variety (in Greece the news is a drama of epic proportions)
-No bad news before 11 o’ clock
-That’s strictly a personal oddity but I have found others who share it with me: No conversations, no telephone calls, before 11 o’ clock (okay, that depends on what time you normally get up. I get up at 8 and I need about 3 hours to get into a sociable mood).
-Very good, strong coffee
-If I can have breakfast in a sunny room (especially one with a decent view) it really wakes me up.
Continuing the Nick Cave tribute, this is one of my favourite morning songs. Good day.
“Thank you for giving
This bright new morning
So steeped seemed the evening
In darkness and blood
There’ll be no sadness
There’ll be no sorrow
There’ll be no road too narrow
There’ll be a new day
And it’s today
For us”
New Morning – Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

You sound happy
February 8th, 2006 at 6:03 am
I visited your blog for the first time today. I found you on “MumboJumbo” and I think your blog is wonderful. I so enjoyed my visit.
February 8th, 2006 at 7:44 am
I think discussing the weather is a UK pastime because it is unpredictable. Albeit not in bad way, it’s not like it’s hurricane followed by drought. More like meandering drizzle followed by a few days sunshine, followed by rain …
I’ve updated my list to include your Dad.
February 8th, 2006 at 8:10 am
I just get up and go. I usually leave myself 20 mins getting ready time from wake up to in the car…. And Im never late!
February 8th, 2006 at 8:26 am
you know what?? I think I need to go eat breakfast now. Perhaps eggs and toast.
February 8th, 2006 at 8:42 am
Good morning too. I think your recipe is one that many should try. I’m definitely a sociable person, however, I need to unwind from sleeping/waking.
I like having oatmeal for breakfast–with a good cup of tea.
February 8th, 2006 at 9:01 am
You certainly enjoy good mornings with the best of companies (real simple!)..
How about some scrambled eggs on a piece of toast or better, kippers to keep you warm?
February 8th, 2006 at 9:57 am
Good morning Chloe!! I hope you have a wonderful day. Don’t let anyone get you down because you have so many people that care about you that you should feel on top of the world.
Hugs to you, Connie

jago
that’s because i am. i just realized!
martie
thank you so much. it’s nice to meet new people. and Connie’s friends are my friends too.
jack
i’m honoured. my dad is in the same list as Gandhi and Brian Eno. I must tell him asap. Is there a Bald Statuette award? And if there was, who would you want it to portray? A bald everyman or someone bald and famous?
nevets
the worthless postman came today. he left me a note i have something for you but didn’t bring it. I called the post office and gave them hell (so to speak) so they are bringing it tomorrow. Aren’t you the sweetest? xxx
daybyday
eggs and toast sounds great. do you have a special breakfast recipe? share please!
angel
i just cleaned the espresso maker, just the way you told me to. and i can’t tell you how different coffee smells. I mean good-different.
Marina
Do you like the magazine too? start collecting, i don’t think it’ll be out there for too long. just a guess, i don’t really know.
Eggs and toast=perfection
Kippers no, I’m a vegetarian
February 8th, 2006 at 10:12 am
The only qualification is that they’re bald men who are not bald. So bald everymen are just fine.
If you’re a vegetarian what are those things in the bowl? The look like dried donkeys cocks.
February 8th, 2006 at 10:13 am
Cool Im glad you’ve got it. Its only a little thing but I wanted you to have it.
I gave our post office a telling off too so someone pulled their fingers out of their arse somewhere
February 8th, 2006 at 10:39 am
the wife refuses to make me breakfast but my mommy STILL makes me bacon and eggs every morning when I’m at home.
I love you mommy!
February 8th, 2006 at 10:53 am
jack
funny you should know what donkey’s cocks look like when they dry.
These are wholemeal breadsticks.
nevets
thank god we exist in the world so the post office people don’t lose interest in their jobs.
zona
Mommy knows best, doesn’t she?
February 8th, 2006 at 11:09 am
I didn’t know. I started off thinking they were cured-meat, because they look a bit like Chorizo, then I got thinking in phallic terms, and thought a donkey would fit.
Then I learnt you’re a vegetarian, and posted anyway for mild comic value :). I don’t really think people get up in the morning to nibble on Eeyore’s bits. Rather than wholemeal bread-sticks.
I’m crap at breakfast. I tend to eat whatever is left over by the time I went to bed.
February 8th, 2006 at 11:33 am
jack
i was being funny too.
February 8th, 2006 at 11:35 am
You were, and I thought it was funny. I wanted to get ‘nibbling on Eeyore’s bits’ in. So I felt compelled to respond :-).
February 8th, 2006 at 11:39 am
Quaker Instant Oatmeal and some fruit juice is the tops for me. I’ll make up some Bisquick pancakes every now and then, but only when I feel good.
February 8th, 2006 at 11:45 am
Connie
Thank you so! I do feel on top of the world. And it has to do with you too.
February 8th, 2006 at 11:46 am
erikku
you are criminally healthy
February 8th, 2006 at 11:54 am
Coffee, coffee and coffee, maybe poundcake-
The news has to be in the background…and the phone alwaysrings off the hook, even early early in the morning (I have family in Mexico who sometimes call despite the two hour difference)
February 8th, 2006 at 1:47 pm
cisco
totally agree. no phonecalls in the morning please, we are trying to get used to the world that is waking up around us.
February 8th, 2006 at 1:50 pm
A Greek barbie!! THen I’ll need to send you one of my new ring designs. I just need you to tell me what size you wear.
Oh this will be exciting!!!!
By the way I did eat eggs and toast this morning. However I decided to read instead of TV. Thanks for the suggestion. Only secret ingredent… Franks redhot sauce. LOVE IT! Is that availible to you?
February 8th, 2006 at 2:38 pm
Back to that cook book idea of yours.
Are you familiar with the Griffin & Sabine novels by Nick Bantock? This is what I pictured as soon as I read the post of yours. It would be brilliant.
Publishing in English would seem the most likely thing for you to do. Adding the Greek to it would be a bonus.
February 8th, 2006 at 2:53 pm
Breakfast huh?
Wassat then?
Decaff coffee and something something if I get up in time…
February 8th, 2006 at 3:25 pm
Ok … I’m with you on the atmospherics - but what’s on the menu for this perfect breakfast?
February 8th, 2006 at 3:27 pm
I am something like scared! Until now I thought of you as “my little sister” but you seems to be the second version of her!
If I would ask her to drive me to the airport in the morning at 8 I have to wake her up at least at 5, because she wouldn’t be able to drive within her “waking up period of 3 hours” neither she could talk (that’s an advantage) nor see or hear anything within this 3 hours!
But coffee - tons of coffee! At least three cups in the morning!

I found this fantastic book
at a booksale called
“Breakfast in Bed” by Carol
Frieberg - i have made
everything in it except the
bread pudding which was the
only dessert my mom ever made-
(otherwise a good cook)
I love breakfast - especially
when I don’t have to be anywhere
particular for the rest of the day.
Smiles!
February 8th, 2006 at 4:11 pm
…oh just read your comments
and hilarious ones with Jack!!!!
February 8th, 2006 at 4:24 pm
ahh nothing like the newest Real Simple and a good cup of coffee
i like reading your blog at breakfast time-it starts my day off perky!!
February 8th, 2006 at 4:59 pm
How I’d love to enjoy breakfast in peace and quiet… Actually, I have breakfast on the boat going to work (23 minute boatride), and it’s very peaceful and more often than not I have company of some friend or other.
But before I get that far I’ve pushed 5 kids out of bed, into their clothes, out in the car and into kindergarten / school. No, they have no joyous breakfasts at home either, but eat where they end up.
We’ll have to do something about that… (To be continued!)
February 8th, 2006 at 5:09 pm
coffee caffeine cappuccino espresso mocca call it what you like, but I need lots of it. and not just throughout the morning. I’d drink it while I’m sleeping if I could figure out a way….
February 8th, 2006 at 5:24 pm
I have to say I eat light at breakfast: something simple cereal, bread and milk. I don’t drink coffee in the morning but if I started I know I’d get addicted. I wish I had more time to enjoy that peaceful time in the morning. It’s still a comfort in these cold mornings to drink my milk with chocolate really hot
February 8th, 2006 at 5:41 pm
Chloe;
I just can’t stay away. I must make time for you!
I continue to be amazed at our similarities…I just recently discovered this magazine and am addicted to it as well. We went to a magazine shop on Sunday, venturing out in the pouring rain and thunderstorms, flooded roads….to buy magazines. I told Mr.C about this one and how I love it.
I hope you are well.
Cathy

My breakfast usually consists of a glass of fresh fruit juice and a quick dash to the door, rushing off for work! I sent you that email, Stev
February 8th, 2006 at 7:59 pm
Nothing nicer than a yummy, leisurely breakfast, shared with your favourite person. Take care, Meow
February 8th, 2006 at 10:42 pm
Good morning!
February 8th, 2006 at 10:44 pm
Yes, I hate having conversations in the morning. I am very quiet until 11 am or noon.
February 8th, 2006 at 11:03 pm
Breakfast is the best part of the day, and I prefer not to speak until way after mass quantities of breakfast have been consumed. This way you and no one else gets knocked over by morning breath.
February 9th, 2006 at 12:07 am
Ah the simple pleasures of a ‘good’ morning !
cheers
February 9th, 2006 at 4:38 am
I love Nick Cave! My perfect breakfast is when I take my time and I don’t have to rush anywhere so this normally happens during weekends and holidays. Coffee + internet checking emails, blogs, etc. + BBC Radio 4 = Good Start to the Day!
I also love a breakfast brought to me in bed by someone who has made me blush the entire evening
February 9th, 2006 at 5:49 am
day
i’m going to find her even if i have to rummage through all the toystores of this country.
no, it’s not available here. what is it?
morgan
you believe in me, i’m honoured and touched. i don’t know these novels. do you think i should read them?
finn
that’s coffee with milk and brown sugar and toast with grilled cheese. today i got Steve’s marmalades, so it was some of those too.
richard
erm, i leave that to you. i have been collecting breakfast recipes this past week. do you have a favourite one?
my breakfast is toast and cheese and coffee. some sundays and saturdays i make scrambled eggs with mushrooms, and i squeeze some oranges for some juice. what’s yours?
gurgo
first of all i didn’t know you had a little sister. but she is absolutely right. no driving at this ungodly hour! what’s your breakfast?
madelyn
that book sounds lovely. maybe i’ll check amazon.
gina
that’s a wonderful thing to say. it’s great to think i’m breakfast material. it’s one of the biggest compliments to me. it really is, because there are many things i can’t deal with that early.
scholiast
we have to do something about your breakfast routine. how about making the kids take turns and make you breakfast. you’ve got one for every working day!
daria
coffee is great and totally necessary, but just coffee? how about a handsome guy making you some pancakes?
devil mood
that’s another recipe i’ve been looking for. hot chocolate with real chocolate (not powder) and without milk, just water. do you know of any?
Cathy
i hope everything is a bit better today.
it really is amazing! i get very excited over magazines and it really seems normal to me to go out in the rain to buy my favourite ones. Once, i had a row with M. because we were in a village for Easter break and he wouldn’t go to town to buy me newspapers. I considered that a major mistake and felt betrayed for weeks!
(i realize it’s silly now, but still…:))
dew
just juice, no coffee? are you Superwoman?
meow
good day meow. favourite persons are excellent for breakfast. i mean to have breakfast with not have them for breakfast.
maja
good morning! but is it morning there? it is and it’s yesterday morning! jesus!
vesper
also, nothing has happened yet at 11 o clock. what is there to say? i don’t get some people!
walter
some people brush their teeth my dearest.
true blue
yay! a picture of you! good morning.
missy
the ability to blush SHOULD be rewarded with some breakfast in bed.
February 9th, 2006 at 6:35 am
I might know that recipe. I’ll tell you if I find it!
February 9th, 2006 at 8:06 am
Franks redhot is only the best hot sauce ever. I’ll see if I can send you a bottle when I send you a ring. What size do you wear?
February 9th, 2006 at 8:07 am
oh I will need to know if you are a mild, medium or extra hot sauce person!
February 9th, 2006 at 9:43 am
day
thank you day!
i don’t know what my finger size is. how do i measure that? in cm?
you really don’t need to go into so much trouble for me!
I’m an extra hot person, hehe
devil
thank you xxxx
February 9th, 2006 at 11:28 am
yes, you should read these novels. perhaps look at them first on Amazon.com to get an idea what they are going to be like.
February 9th, 2006 at 2:03 pm
yes cm would be okay.
February 15th, 2006 at 7:52 am
oh! i seem to have no time for breakfast :(…..though i do realise it is the most important meal of the day…..all i do on waking is switch on the computer and listen to music while i get ready, gulping down a glass of milk:)
