This has been Cultural Week for me. I went to another exhibition. This was by a famous –in Greece- set decorator and costume designer, Dionysis Fotopoulos, who has more or less worked in most of the theatrical productions that mattered in Greece. One part of the exhibition presents his collections of art objects and the other part is his costumes and set designs of more than 35 years. It was exquisite.
Then there was the Kiss Anniversary yesterday. Because I have known M. for more than I can remember as an on-off friend first, boyfriend later, father of our child much later, and husband much later, there are many anniversaries, but this is the one that matters most to me, because that was the day he was set apart from the world in my head. So we went out to dinner and exchanged gifts and cards (I got him dolls again. Well, not exactly dolls, just the dolls from Tim Burton’s movies. They rest on the mantelpiece now and they look cute from far away, but once you come closer, they are really creepy).
My son and I went to Starbucks yesterday. He saw an imitation of an ancient statue that portrays a bare-breasted woman. “Why are her breasts showing?” he asked me while touching them as if to make his point more valid. “Well, it’s no big deal, statues are often nude” I answer. And he frowns and points his little finger and tells me “But why is Truman’s fully dressed?”
P.S Yes, we do have Truman’s statue in Athens.

I love those pictures of the costumes. They are so elaborate. Now that is something I would really get a kick out of seeing. Thanks for sharing those.
Happy “First Kiss Anniversary” to you. Sounds like you had a nice time.
Hugs, Connie

Great pictures.
I love the things that children say. When you listen, they have so much to say.
February 1st, 2006 at 11:45 pm
because NOBODY wants to see Truman naked.

Kids always know what to say… When my oldest was in kindergarten, they visited this park of statues in Oslo. One of the statues is of a man carrying four babies. One of the kindergarten staff told Jakob: that must be your dad, with the quads! But Jakob replied: no, my dad has a much bigger willie…
Funny too, that your week has also been a cultural one!

I wanna try the costumes on. Do you think they’ll let me?
I think you should find naked Jim Carrey pics from the net and say there’s Truman

happy anniversary!
anyone can remember the day they got married or birthdays… there’s some kind of paper that validates them… but things like the first kiss… or the first time holding hands… that’s the smaller, but just as precious moments. very romantic.
*hugs*

Chloe;
The exhibit looks amazing. I wonder if there is a web site that we can go to see more?…
Congratulations again on your first kiss anniversary. I would love to hear more about your love story with M., but perhaps you will not want to post too much detail here…Mr.C and I have been married forever; we got married quite young. Some day I will post about it perhaps, but he reads all my posts, so I have to also respect what he would rather I not post…
Your son; too funny..:)

Cathy
the museum has a site http://www.benaki.gr (it’s a complex of museums and galleries in different parts of the city, when you come i’ll take you there, nice cafe too) but the exhibition itself doesn’t have a site, there’s just some mention of it in the general site. The internet is not as developed as it should (and could) be in greece. But i took many many photos and i’m going to post them here and also send a few to you via email.
The love story is fun. Because it started when we were 18 and now we are, well, in our thirties. But we have been married for 3 years only.
I don’t have a problem posting details here. I just thought i’d bore everybody to death!

I sure love your pictures
I cannot remember where this truman statue is, right before the american embassy maybe?
zona boy that was good!

I think it is beautiful that you celebrate the first kiss you had with M. I remember all of my important first kisses. They are some of the fondest memories I have. Sweet that you get to celebrate yours.

kissing is vital - it tells
you all.

Thanks for all the post “Chloe’s Cultural Week” posts. I haven’t traveled much this past year, and will not this year either (but the plans, oh, the plans I have!!!) as I’ve been busy building some part of my life I’d been neglecting. You remind me that there is so much to see here, where I live. This year I shall be a tourist in my home city again.
First, and really all kisses should be noted and cataloged for the times when we need to think about them. Goodbye ones too, I guess, but those should be filed separately.

I have another CD and the King of Wishful Thinking…Thank you!
The movie geek in me wondered why does Greece have a statue of Jim Carrey (’The Truman Show’)
That looks like an interesting exhibition…

Chloe;
I will take a look at the web site, and look forward to the photos. I will be there, for sure.
I look forward to hearing your love story. Not a bore, no way, how could you think so? Mr.C. and I have been together since I was 18 as well, but we have been married forever. Really, forever. (13 years..shhhhhh)
February 2nd, 2006 at 10:38 am
Wow..I don’t remember last tie I went to a Museum..You just might push me back there.

““Why are her breasts showing?†he asked me while touching them as if to make his point more valid.” - I loved that! lol
Is that Truman the President of the USA? Why is he in Greece?
February 2nd, 2006 at 10:53 am
i like the bird mask. I would wear it and pretend to be Indian. When Im bored of that I would re-inact the whole plot of The Birds before switching to the red robe costume and pretending (?) I was Superman

I am really digging the culture of Athens and Greece from your posts. It’s like a history lesson, tho I still can’t understand why it’s so blech.
How about putting your journalistic hat on and exposing the blech-ness of the city in some photo posts, that city that you see day to day?

vista
yes it’s near the embassy. an ugly statue.
stephanie
if i want to come across like the old auntie i really am, i’d say, that kiss was given at a time when kissing somebody meant a relationship was about to begin. Really old fashioned.
madelyn
smooch
stephanie
you are right about kisses. except that i don’t remember kissing anybody goodbye. I mean, goodbye as in “we are no longer together”. A kick yes, a kiss no
Finn
great, you got the King!
Cathy
that’s a long time. commitment scares me. so i pretended it didn’t exist by not getting married. Silly of me because there was no difference.
hey, i talk like a man! (i just realized)
You should come, definitely. i’ll make a list of all the things to do.
heidi
go to that museum/gallery and tell us all about it. although it’s not really necessary. you are interesting as it is. museums are for bores like me. (sorry Cathy ;))
February 2nd, 2006 at 12:07 pm
devil
The US gave money to Greece during the greek civil war (immediately after the 2nd World War) to keep away the “threat of communism”. Truman was the President of the US back then.
Nevets
i’ll see what i can do. i can really see you in those feathers, and i think they’d work wonders for you dear.
Erikku
I have thought of that too. Because the ugly bits are so many. But i can’t stand them. i’ll think about it.
xx

wow! the pics are lovely as always….and you are so lucky you get to see such wonderful piece of art?….truman’s statue?….your son seems to notice details and has a say of his own, he’s quite matured in his own way, i believe?
