From up: Fleamarket, Plaka, Plaka, my favourite blue house, and something on a wall
Blondie, M., Tassos and me are going out to lunch in a while. It’s a place in the Fleamarket where you sit among the antiques, well, let’s face it, not antiques, mostly old stuff nobody wants, and eat really nice food and listen to heartbreaking music. Because that’s the way greek people enjoy food, when it brings tears in their eyes. I don’t know where that comes from. Why do greek people listen to sad music when they go out to eat? They also dance to sad music. And it doesn’t make them sadder. It makes them happier.
Well, this is where I am going now, right after Starbucks where I currently am. Totally different kind of environment. So this is today’s schizophrenic moment. Me, leaving Starbucks with laptop (thank you blondie), earphones, Radiohead mp3s and mobile phones and going to have lunch among retro chairs and broken teapots, to listen to songs of mourning and despair (ok, not unlike Radiohead), have a salad and drink ouzo under the blinding sun. Roll on the floor laughing too, just like I always do when I meet blondie and the others.
Shopping bag I bought:
-A Cole Porter Cd, called Cocktails with Cole Porter. I am not one to say no to Porter or Cocktails, so what could I do? -A Smashing Pumpkins Cd, Adore. It’s the one I didn’t have. M. always used to say it’s their worst album, but their worst is good enough for me. -Blondie bought and gave me (to burn) a fabulous Chet Baker Collection of 3 Cds. I want to say something about Chet Baker. To me he is the quintessence of cool, he epitomizes jazz and his purity simply captivates me. I can listen to him forever, whether he sings or just plays. And I love it when he sings "your looks are
laughable, unphotographable, yet you’re my favourite work of art".

“Adore” isn’t the Pumpkins “worst” album…just unlike anything else of theirs. Showcases their early 80’s new wave influences. Hope you like it.
Oooh…and thanks for the link!

Do you have a flickr account?..
Take the pictures “on” Sept 29th. Pick one and send it to the flickr group. You can send it that same day or after…
Sad music goes well with beer-makes tears flow better……

Have you read the newly discovered Sappho poem. Her reflections on aging and the passage of time…
“[You for] the fragrant-blossomed Muses’ lovely gifts
[be zealous,] girls, [and the] clear melodious lyre:
[but my once tender] body old age now
[has seized;] my hair’s turned [white] instead of dark;
my heart’s grown heavy, my knees will not support me,
that once on a time were fleet for the dance as fawns.
This state I oft bemoan; but what’s to do?
Not to grow old, being human, there’s no way.
Tithonus once, the tale was, rose-armed Dawn,
love-smitten, carried off to the world’s end,
handsome and young then, yet in time grey age
o’ertook him, husband of immortal wife.”

Michael!lovely poem.
Are you implying I AM OLD?
August 30th, 2005 at 8:26 am
A professional question…how did you become a freelance writer?
August 30th, 2005 at 8:35 am
Of course not. I just like the poem. Does that imply I am feminine? It is, afterall, addressed to ladies… but of course it is not about gender. Nor is it really about age, in the sense that “we” tend to mean it today…
Besides, you look like you are 16.

Dear Fb:
How I became a freelance journalist.
It’s very simple. I had a good 9-5 job in a big newspaper and on an internet site. Being the self destructive fool I am, I quit my job and now am a freelance journalist. I don’t recommend it though.

Michael, remind me to pay you a compliment in public.
