Work

People have had to make sacrifices for work in the past. Joan of Arc had to have that awful haircut, Prince Charles had to marry Diana, etc. But the things I am being asked to do for work, are getting out of hand. People from the magazine called again  and started making questions about mushrooms: Do I like mushrooms, they asked. I do, I like eating them, I like looking at them, and if I were a tiny bit shorter, I could live in them too. Do I know of any good vegetarian mushroom recipes? Well I do, because I hardly eat anything without mushrooms in it or close to it. Do I have a mushroom moussaka recipe? No, because it never crossed my mind to bury lovely mushrooms between layers of sauce and aubergines. But I can find one. Can I give them the recipes? They’ll pay me. It’s pure journalistic work. Ok, I can do that. They are not poems, they are recipes. Can I cook the stuff and can they call a photographer and take pictures and put them in the magazine? Well, am I going to be in the photos? Do I need to have manicured hands to chop the mushrooms? Do I have to clean my kitchen? No, they said. Only the mushrooms get to appear in the photos. I can deal with mushrooms being in the limelight. But I am not a food writer damn it and I am not a professional cook. Plus, it is a well known fact that food stylists mess with food to the point where they paint it and polish it if it doesn’t look delicious enough. So, that’s what they asked me to do. And I said no. Not because I am a respectable journalist, but do I really want to poison the readers and then go to jail, and have to eat carnivore food for the rest of my life?

    Dear Stevi/Chloe,

Thanks for the notes. I was a bit tight (the claret again) when i wrote the last message. I did not mean to imply the handicapped should not be treated equally… but I do think the idea of subsidising prostitutes is slightly daft. Does this mean the poor should have discounted sex? Should the rich pay more (they do, but only when shopping or in divorce)…

Wikipedia informs me that you are correct about Pomona. I trusted you, but I wanted to check. Next time I will check there frist before I try to be too clever by half.

As for age. You look a lot younger than me. That goofy Potteresque photo I put on my profile is jsut meant to make my look loveable and non-threatening. Like a non GM food.

I think your mushroom story is a good one. I would take the job. what sorts of projects are you usually assigned? Is this a major Greek magazine?

Also. I like Prince Charles. He is fairly harmless, and nothing like the nasty old git that fathered him…

I also had a greek thought this morning. I think The British Museum should return the Elgin Marbles. Well, we call them the Elgin marbles (after the chap that stole them)… I think you fellows call them the Parthenon Marbles. They are, afterall, yours.

    More soon!

    Michael

    Chloe,

it probably will be us approaching the mushrooms season, that’s all, there will be people with umbrellas as their minds won’t be as a clear sky, let’s say…

Being you a poet and a journalist I don’t see the need for going after mushrooms :-) However, if you ever change your mind I like the chinese shiitake, they are the best for your health, basically they clean the liver and are considered in the chinese culture one of the foods for longevity, are highly beneficial and top of the market range -tip: better to get them at authentic chinese stablishments available all year long dehydrated-.
They taste very nice sauted with rice, chopped onion, diced carrot, garlic and soja sauce.

I love shiitake mushrooms, all kinds of mushrooms really. I didn’t know they promoted longevity though. If they do I must revise my pension plan because I have been eating tons of them.

    I’ll even do your nails..
